Phase I
Phase I consists of two 220 MW moderate pressure water and heavy water reactors (PHWR). KAPS-1 became critical on September 3, 1992 and began commercial power production a few months later on May 6, 1993. KAPS-2 became critical on January 8, 1995 and began commercial production on September 1, 1995. In January 2003, CANDU Owners Group (COG) declared KAPS the highest performing pressurized water reactor.
KAPS-2 was shut down after a cooling channel leak in July 2015 and a similar issue forced KAPS-1 to be shut down in March 2016. After replacing the cooling channels and feed tubes, KAPS-2 reached criticality in September 2018. Maintenance on KAPS-1 was completed ahead of schedule and became operational on May 19, 2019.
Construction costs were initially estimated at ₹382.52 crore; the plant was eventually completed at a cost of ₹1,335 crore.
Stage II
In 2007, the Indian government approved general plans to build two indigenously designed IPHWR-700 reactors, with two sister reactors later at the Rajasthan Atomic Power Plant. Approval was confirmed in 2009 and site preparation was completed in August 2010. First concreting for Kakrapar 3 and 4 took place in November 2010 and March 2011 respectively and it was initially expected to be operational at the start and end of of 2018. respectively.
The project was largely overrun due to the adjustment of the IPHWR-700 design and the slow delivery of supplies. It is now expected to go live in October 2020 and September 2021, respectively. Unit 3 reached its first criticality on July 22, 2020.
Unit 3 was connected to the network on January 10, 2021.
